About This Fundraiser
Teach North Korean Refugees will go international. We have been receiving requests from NK refugees around the world for us to help them adjust to living outside of North Korea.
This fundraiser will support TNKR's international activities. So that your donations can double their impact, I will match the first 1 million won (about $900) that is donated.
TNKR began as a humble gathering in March 2013 when we matched a handful of North Korean refugees with volunteer tutors in Seoul. Since then, more than 270 refugees have studied with more than 570 volunteer tutors and coaches.
English is important to helping refugees access opportunities in South Korea. According to one study, 32 percent of refugees drop out of school because of problems with English (that's even higher than 28 percent who dropped out to earn money). Of refugees who said they considered dropping out, another 33 percent cited English as a reason. English is needed for employment tests in South Korea, so many refugees get eliminated almost immediately.
After our recent trip to the UK, we learned that refugees there are also struggling with English. We hope that we can provide support for refugees there.
"What should be done about North Korea?" "How can we help North Koreans and North Korean refugees?" TNKR has put those questions to refugees studing in the organization. Several refugees are now developing projects, with assistance from TNKR volunteers, to create and develop orginal and authentic projects related to North Korea.
TNKR learners are in charge of the projects, developing leadership and management skills. They can also develop projects giving advice to others who want to increase freedom for North Koreans still in North Korea or to help North Koreans adjust to living in the outside world.
