About This Fundraiser

Hello friends and family!

I've decided to dedicate two weekends per month as a volunteer English tutor for North Korean refugees. Like many immigrants to other countries, North Koreans have difficulty adjusting to life in South Korea, particularly where the education system is concerned. South Korean universities require a high level of English, which North Koreans have not had the privilege of acquiring due to the severely limited quality of education in North Korea.

Teach North Korean Refugees (TNKR) provides useful services for ambitious North Korean refugees seeking to achieve higher education, thus improving their socioeconomic status. So, friends and family, lend a helping hand! I challenge everyone to take a quick second to donate $1.00 or 1,000 Won to TNKR! If everyone who sees this does just that, together, we can give our North Korean friends a boost!

About General Fund

In November 2016, the Ministry of Unification in South Korea reported that the number of North Korean refugees escaping to South Korea had surpassed 30,000. Various media report various challenges that refugees face in adjusting to South Korea. An estimated 35 percent of refugees are unemployed, 80 percent work in menial jobs, and refugees who are employed earn 50% of what South Koreans earn.

Escaping North Korea is the first battle many refugees face. Many report that English is a major barrier for many of them, as they struggle with "Konglish" words that have seeped into the South Korean language. TNKR helps refugees by connecting them with volunteer tutors. Since its founding in March 2013, TNKR has connected more than 250 refugees with 492 volunteer tutors and coaches.
